Benz & Cie. Rheinische Gasmotorenfabrik was a pioneering automobile manufacturer founded in 1883 by Karl Benz in Mannheim, Germany. The company initially focused on the production of stationary gas engines before transitioning to the development of motor vehicles. In 1885, Karl Benz created the Benz Patent Motorwagen, which is widely regarded as the first true automobile powered by an internal combustion engine.

Throughout its early years, Benz & Cie. expanded its operations and became a significant player in the automotive industry. The company was officially established as Benz & Cie. Rheinische Gasmotorenfabrik in 1885 and underwent several name changes, including Benz & Cie. Rheinische Gasmotorenfabrik AG in 1899 and later Benz & Cie. Rheinische Automobil- und Motorenfabrik AG in 1911. By the early 20th century, Benz & Cie. had produced a range of vehicles, including the popular Benz Velo, which was one of the first mass-produced cars.

In 1926, Benz & Cie. merged with Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft to form Daimler-Benz AG, which would later become known for its Mercedes-Benz brand. This merger marked a significant milestone in the automotive industry, combining the innovative engineering of both companies and solidifying their legacy in automotive history.
