Fukang was an automobile brand that emerged from a joint venture between Dongfeng Motors Corporation and Citroën, known as Shenlong (Dongfeng Citroën) Automobile Corporation. This partnership was established in 1990, with production commencing in 1992 at a factory located in Xiangfan, Hubei Province, China. The brand primarily focused on manufacturing vehicles tailored for the Chinese market.
The Fukang brand was best known for its rebadged version of the Citroën ZX, which was marketed as the Fukang. The initial model was a 1360cc hatchback, designated as the DC 7140, which featured a 4-speed transmission. The production of the Fukang was significant, with plans to expand the factory's capacity from an initial 150,000 units to 300,000 units. In addition to the hatchback, a 1587cc variant with a 5-speed transmission and Bosch fuel injection was also produced.
In August 1998, the Fukang 988 DC7160 was introduced, a model specifically designed for the Chinese market by Heuliez. The brand also produced a chassis with a cab that served as the foundation for the Dongfeng BO van and pick-up. Furthermore, local assembly of the Citroën XM V6 occurred under the Fengsheng brand in a small workshop in Guangdong Province. The Fukang brand played a role in the development of the automotive industry in China during the 1990s, contributing to the growing presence of foreign automotive manufacturers in the region.
