The most authentic car games to play today

Jan 20, 2025

For passionate car lovers, video games have always been a divisive offering. For every authentic Gran Turismo product featuring familiar brands, there are releases like Mario Kart that contain odd vehicles with weapons to use. These days, there are some realistic titles that are winning over car enthusiasts, though.

It’s a genre that is actually packed full of releases. Even today, new games are popping up on prominent gaming platforms all the time, with many car-themed favorites receiving plenty of glowing reviews. Be it on mobile, new games on slot platforms, or on sophisticated gaming machines like a PlayStation 5, there is an array of authentic car games to play today, many of which serve up unbeatable entertainment that petrol heads enjoy.

So, if you’re considering snapping up a leading console in the near future or if you simply want to have a car-themed mobile release to play for a few minutes when boredom sets in at work, then below is a brief lowdown on some of the most authentic car games of today.

Assetto Corsa Competizione

A title that prides itself on realism, Assetto Corsa Competizione is the official GT World Challenge game and it has won over millions of gamers and car enthusiasts alike since its release in 2019. Accessible on platforms like the PlayStation 5 and on PC, it contains real-world cars, world-famous circuits, the sport’s array of teams, and so much more. Also offering impressively realistic graphics and an abundance of game modes to tackle, such as Career and Championship, Assetto Corsa Competizione is an excellent release.

GRID Autosport

A game that has taken the mobile gaming world by storm, GRID Autosport serves up a more casual aspect thanks to it being hosted on smartphone devices. Although it can be experienced on other gaming platforms, it’s best suited to a portable gaming experience on an iOS or an Android device. In the game, players can race a huge selection of familiar vehicles, there are instantly recognizable tracks on offer, and you can even tailor the difficulty level while you attempt to grasp the title. Overall, when assessing the very best car games on smartphone devices, GRID Autosport is hard to beat.

Automobilista 2

A fantastic game from this particular genre, Automobilista 2 initially experienced some issues when it was released, but it has since overcome any teething problems to become a smash-hit with gaming communities. Thanks to numerous updates, the game is still popular today, with players being able to drive recognizable replicas of F1 cars, although it doesn’t have a license for every single F1 brand that fans know and love. Overall, though, in terms of offering high-octane racing action, Automobilista 2 is excellent.

Hot Lap League

Another option on mobile, Hot Lap League probably isn’t the best game on the list but it still represents an enticing racing option in the virtual world. Playable on both Apple and Android phones, the game’s slick controls and its array of excellent settings are what makes it such a strong contender for so many diehard petrol heads. While the graphics could be better, Hot Lap League makes up for it with a series of testing tracks that are full of tough corners to take and the occasional crazy loop to execute. In terms of offering strong doses of fun, the makers of Hot Lap League have absolutely nailed it.

Some other favourites

While the four games featured are some of the best around, the popularity of the genre means there are a plethora of other viable products. They include Gran Turismo 7, Le Mans Ultimate, rFactor 2, Project Cars 2, and iRacing.
