CRC Speedshow 2016 - Exclusive Review! [w/Gallery]

calendar Sep 23, 2016

there are many car shows all around the globe during the season. some are grand events like geneva or paris motorshows, concourses of elegance like pebble beach or villa d'este. however, there are also some small nearly local events which are almost outside of the radar and unfortunately, they are easily missed buy general audience of the world. that's a shame because such events usually have a display of cars much more interesting than most big shows!

to be precise, we are talking about the crc speedshow event which happened in the middle of this summer in distant new zealand. "what's so special there?" you may ask. and the answer is.. special cars! not ultra expensive hypercars, not high performance supercars, but equally spectacular nz-made automobiles.

the event in auckland attracted a good dozen of privately-designed and made unique cars. thanks to our correspondent mr daan hoffmann we are especially happy to share with you an exclusive gallery of these beautiful machines! let's not linger and take a look.

the first model that immediately catches attention is the bright blue heron mj1 sport. approximately only 25 examples of this lotus-inpired fiat-engined sportscars were been made between 1984 and 1985. thus, seeing one under the spotlights in excellent condition is truly jaw-dropping!

another nice display was by a still active almac company which are successfully building kit cars since 1984. they range included mg tc replica, cobra replica for both road and race and original sabre model. as you can notice, a black and yellow example was much ready for the race, as well.

alternative cars from auckland is a yet another veteran manufacturer which has been making mg tf replica and jaguar ss100 replica for the last 30 years since 1983. unfortunately, they stopped activities in 2013.

take a look at the lovely e-type-inpired cheetah which was also made in auckland at the end of the '80s. that neat looking holden-based model was created by cheetah kit cars in a run of only 9 examples. that's a rare car, isn't it?

"it's a bmw m1!", you may point your finger at a bright red car. you would be just half-right. the car, actually, is emw6 made by everson motor works. also from auckland. yes, it is m1 replica, but this example is based on holden commodore. it's name indicates that it is the sixth design of its designer cliff everson. only 4 units were constructed between 1983 and 1989!

a nice green fraser clubman is a product of fraser cars ltd who are busy making these lotus seven-inspired models since 1988.

a white batmobile is a road-racing kitcar dsn390 made by a small an pretty new company hypercars nz. since then the company looks to be keeping very low volumes. hopefully, they are still in the game..

those of you with at least a small interest in nz-made cars and their history definitely know ferris de joux. he was perhaps the most prolific kiwi car-designer and maker with so many different designs and prototypes that it is very hard to trace them all back to their roots. anyhow, his mini gt is one of the best known designs. a nimble derivative was constructed between 1969 and 1972. only 20 examples were made which are now much sought after among collectors.

last but not least in our review is a real head-turner - the mrx saker sv1-r. a company specializing in racing car build and preparation took the mighty kiwi superkitcar and converted it into a bright yellow race track beast. it uses chevrolet 6.6-liter v8 engine which develops 560hp. bonkers!

as you see, the crc speedshow 2016 was a real petrolhead's venue which paid a good tribute to the history and present of nz-made cars. without such events success and failure stories of their designers would be forgotten forever. as we feel liable to prevent this, we hope to bring you more on these amazing creations envisioned and created by truly enthusiastic individuals.
