TDX

UNITED STATES

time-calendar.png 1966

The TDX, conceived by plastics consultant Pat Amendolia, was a unique project that showcased a blend of innovative ideas in automotive construction. The car incorporated various types of plastics, demonstrating Amendolia's expertise and versatility in material application. Beyond being a mere display of plastic capabilities, the TDX served as a platform for Amendolia's novel automotive design concepts, potentially applicable to other materials as well.

Constructed largely by Amendolia himself, the TDX featured a transmission tunnel that served multiple functions, housing wires, lines, and mechanical components while integrating clear plastic elements for visibility. Notably, the use of polycarbonate for parts like the driveshaft and fuel line provided a transparent view of internal workings, enhancing both functionality and aesthetics.

Innovative safety features included a shielded housing for rocket-assist brakes, inspired by aerospace experiments, offering additional braking power for emergency situations. The monocoque construction, predominantly comprised of fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP) with urethane foam filling, resulted in a remarkably sturdy yet lightweight body.

Amendolia's meticulous attention to detail extended to elements such as the rear window, crafted from polycarbonate for superior strength and clarity. Practical considerations, such as the implementation of "idiot lights" for gauges and a speedometer calibrated in feet per second, reflected his forward-thinking approach to driver interface design.

The development of the TDX spanned several years, allowing Amendolia to refine his techniques and explore new possibilities in plastics fabrication. His advice to consult with auto body experts and consider common areas of vehicle damage underscored a pragmatic approach to design, rooted in real-world considerations.

Ultimately, the TDX stood as a testament to Pat Amendolia's ingenuity and dedication to pushing the boundaries of automotive innovation through the strategic application of plastic materials and forward-looking design principles.
