Grout was an American automobile manufacturer based in Orange, Massachusetts, active from 1900 to 1912. The company was founded by the Grout brothers—Carl, Fred, and C.B.—who began their foray into automotive engineering with experimental vehicles powered by both petrol and steam. Their father, William H. Grout, who had previously achieved success in the sewing machine industry, established the business for his sons after they had developed their initial prototypes around 1898.

The first steam-powered vehicles produced by Grout emerged from the factory in the summer of 1900. These early models featured typical characteristics of steam cars of the era, including 2-cylinder engines located under the seat, single-chain drive, tiller steering, and bicycle-type wheels. One notable model was the 1901 coupe, which had a fully enclosed body that resembled a mobile sentry box. The early steamers were marketed under the name "New Home," reflecting the family's sewing machine legacy.

In 1903, Grout expanded its lineup to include a larger four-seater tonneau model, which featured double chain drive and a distinctive locomotive-type cow catcher as a bumper. However, by 1905, the company shifted its focus away from steam vehicles, producing its last steam model, a 12/18hp side entrance tonneau. That same year, Grout introduced a 20hp four-cylinder petrol car, followed by larger models of 30/35hp and 40/45hp. Despite their conventional design and shaft drive, these petrol cars struggled to compete in a crowded market.

In 1907, William Grout took control of the company from his sons due to dissatisfaction with their management. Following his death in 1908, the company was restructured as the Grout Automobile Co. However, production declined steadily, ultimately ceasing in 1912. The earlier steam models were also marketed in England under the name Weston.
