Elite Enterprises was an American manufacturer of kit cars, founded in 1971 by racing driver Gerry Knapp in Cocato, Minnesota. The company specialized in producing high-quality kit cars that appealed to automotive enthusiasts and hobbyists.
The first model introduced by Elite was the Laser GT, which featured an unusual design and was built on a shortened Volkswagen platform. Among its notable offerings, the Laser 917 stood out as a loose recreation of the Porsche 917K, also utilizing a Volkswagen Beetle floorpan. Customers had the option to equip their vehicles with various engines, including those from Porsche, Corvair, Mazda, and General Motors' V6.
In addition to the Laser series, Elite Enterprises produced a replica of the Allard J2X, which featured a custom frame that could accommodate either front-engine V8 or rear-engine Volkswagen engines. The company also created the Mini-18, a Volkswagen-based kit that resembled a miniature semi-tractor truck, and the Laser 49er, a fiberglass minivan body that was compatible with Volkswagen running gear. Furthermore, Elite built a successful line of Formula Vee racing cars, contributing to its reputation in the motorsport community.
Gerry Knapp passed away in 1986, after which Elite Enterprises was acquired by QUINT Industries. The Allard replica, in particular, became a notable sales success under the new ownership.
