Brand Data

Company Name: Edwards Motor Car Co.

Place: Long Island City, New York

Country: United States

Edwards Motor Car Company was established in 1912 in Long Island City, New York, by H.J. Edwards and C.G. Stoddard. Both founders had previously worked for Stoddard-Dayton, where Edwards had designed the Stoddard-Knight model. The company was formed after they left Stoddard-Dayton, which had become part of the United States Motor Company, a venture that ultimately faced financial difficulties.

The Edwards Motor Car Company produced vehicles featuring a Knight sleeve-valve engine, specifically a 4.5-liter four-cylinder engine that delivered 40 to 50 horsepower. The cars were equipped with a four-speed gearbox that included direct drive in third gear and an overdrive in fourth. The design of the vehicle featured a double-dropped frame, contributing to a low-profile appearance. Edwards offered the car in five body styles: tourer, roadster, speedster, limousine, and landaulette.

Production of the Edwards vehicles commenced in December 1912; however, the company faced challenges, and by October 1913, the design, license, and factory equipment were acquired by John North Willys. The manufacturing machinery was relocated to Elyria, Ohio, where the vehicle was produced under the name Willys-Knight, achieving greater production numbers than any other American sleeve-valve car of its time.
