Arntz Engineering Co. was an American manufacturer based in San Francisco, California, operational from 1971 to 1981. Founded by Steve Arntz, the company is notable for its role in popularizing Cobra replicas, which became a significant segment of the kit car market in the United States. Although not the first to produce a Cobra clone, Arntz's kits were distinguished by effective promotion and a reputation for quality.
The engineering behind the Arntz replicas was developed in collaboration with HufFaker Engineering, a firm known for its successful racing car designs. The replicas featured a rectangular-steel ladder frame, utilizing MGB front suspension and a Jaguar XKE independent rear suspension. Most of these vehicles were equipped with Chevrolet V8 engines, which contributed to their performance and appeal. The Arntz replicas found success in amateur club racing, further enhancing their reputation.
Despite their popularity and impressive sales, Arntz Engineering Co. ceased operations in 1981. The rights to the project were subsequently acquired by Butler Racing, and later transferred to G & S Motorsports, marking the end of the original Arntz brand.
