The Anhut Motor Car Company was established in Detroit, Michigan, during the brief period from 1909 to 1910. The company was backed by John Anhut, a Michigan State Senator, who aimed to produce automobiles that catered to the growing market of the early 20th century. Anhut's venture focused on manufacturing a two-seater roadster and a toy tonneau, both powered by a 3.7-litre six-cylinder Brownell engine.

Despite initial encouraging sales, Anhut found greater satisfaction in his political career and subsequently decided to relinquish control of the company. The business was then handed over to H.C. Barnes, the factory superintendent, who reorganized the company under the new name Barnes Motor Car Company in September 1910. However, this reorganization was short-lived, as the company declared bankruptcy just two months later. It remains unclear whether any vehicles were produced under the Barnes name, although there is a potential link to the Barnes Manufacturing Company based in Sandusky, Ohio.
