Desauto

UNITED KINGDOM

time-calendar.png 1967-1967

The Desauto Stevens GT stands as a notable Le Mans prototype car, originating from the design prowess of Tony Stevens in the United Kingdom during the year 1967. This innovative creation emerged under the auspices of Rootes Group Engineering, where Stevens held the position of Chief Engineer.

During this period, Rootes Group was heavily invested in their Sunbeam Tiger V8 project for the Le Mans racing event. Despite Stevens' endeavors, his design and proposals failed to garner recognition from the company's board of directors. Undeterred, Stevens embarked on a personal venture to construct the Desauto Stevens GT. His vision materialized in the form of an aluminum monocoque chassis, featuring a unique powertrain configuration comprising two Hillman Imp 4-cylinder engines merged to create a potent 2.0-liter V8 engine.

Unfortunately, detailed historical records regarding the Desauto Stevens GT remain scarce. However, it is speculated that remnants of this pioneering prototype may still exist, potentially awaiting rediscovery in obscure locales like barns or storage facilities.

Although the Desauto Stevens GT never graced the tracks of Le Mans as initially intended, it did find its place in motorsport competitions, participating in various race circuits and hill climbs, albeit without the prominence of its Le Mans ambitions.
