Copycats Ltd. was established in 1982 in Bolton, Lancashire, and operated until 1987. The company quickly gained recognition for its high-quality replicas of classic Jaguar models, particularly the Jaguar C-Type. Copycats offered two main types of replicas: an expensive aluminum-bodied version that utilized Jaguar Mk II parts, featuring a live rear axle, and a more accessible fiberglass-bodied variant based on Jaguar XJ6 components, which was slightly wider and easier to finish. Both types were available as fully assembled vehicles or in kit form.
In 1987, the company rebranded as Proteus Reproductions, continuing its operations in Bolton. Under this new name, Proteus expanded its offerings to include replicas of the Jaguar D-Type and XKSS. The company provided various options for bodyshells, including long or short-nose configurations, single or dual doors, and choices between fixed or detachable rear fins.
Proteus further diversified its product line by creating an exact replica of the Mercedes-Benz 300SLR racer and a vintage van replica known as the Norseman. The company’s most notable Jaguar replica was the P90, an intricate copy of the XJ13 racer, which featured a mid-mounted V12 engine. In 1996, a fully enclosed version of this model was constructed, showcasing Proteus's commitment to craftsmanship and detail in automotive replication.
