Birchfield Sports was a British manufacturer of kit cars, founded by Clive Smart, a former employee of Panther Westwinds. The company was based in Northampton and began production in 1985. Birchfield Sports gained attention for its distinctive design, which closely resembled the Panther J72, a model known for its classic styling.
The construction of Birchfield Sports vehicles involved hand-crafted aluminum bodywork, with the curved sections meticulously shaped in multiple pieces. The chassis was designed as a robust space frame featuring a substantial central spine, which contributed to the vehicle's strength and performance. Birchfield Sports utilized mechanical components from the Jaguar XJ6, enhancing the car's reliability and driving experience.
At the time of its launch, the Birchfield Sports was noted for being the most expensive kit car available in Britain. By 1998, approximately 22 units had been produced, and the car remained available for special order, reflecting a niche market for bespoke automotive craftsmanship.
