Alto Component Cars was a British manufacturer active during two distinct periods: from 1985 to 1988 and again from 1994 to 1996. The company was based in Preston, Lancashire, and was known for producing unique kit cars. One of its notable designs was the Alto Duo, a compact two-seater city car that utilized Mini subframes and was constructed on a space frame chassis. The body of the Alto Duo was made from glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) and featured a distinctive glass hatch.
The Alto Duo was initially designed by David Gornall, who later sold the project to journalist Alexander Graham Pipe of Automotive Concepts. Under Pipe's direction, the Alto Duo was further developed, including the creation of an electric version. In 1994, Gornall introduced the Alto Boxer, which was a heavily modified Mini featuring an aggressive body kit. The Alto Duo project was subsequently taken over by Rhino Engineering, based in Newburgh, Lancashire, which continued to produce the vehicle until 1996.
