Waseda / WEI

WEI, formally Waseda Environmental Institute Co., Ltd., was a Japanese university-linked venture established in August 2003 and based in Nishi-Waseda, Shinjuku, Tokyo. It was created to commercialize technologies and products developed at Waseda University in the environmental and energy fields, combining consulting, evaluation services, and advanced mobility projects. In the automotive sector, the company was associated with the promotion of ultra-light electric and fuel-cell vehicles and with the wider Waseda electric-bus development program led by researchers connected to the university.

Its best-known vehicle project was the ULV, an ultra-light single-seat battery or fuel-cell vehicle with a reported weight of about 80 kg. Company material presented it as a compact mobility concept positioned between a bicycle and a conventional automobile. WEI also operated within the same technical ecosystem as the Waseda Advanced Electric Micro Bus and later Waseda Electric Bus research programs, which focused on electric public transport, rapid charging, and energy-saving mobility systems. The company’s vehicle activity formed part of a broader effort to transfer Waseda’s environmental and transport research into practical commercial applications.
