Eddy

Eddy Current Controls (India) Ltd. was an Indian engineering company established in 1971 that pioneered eddy-current variable speed drives and related control systems in India, initially described as developed in technical collaboration with Yaskawa Electric of Tokyo. The firm operated manufacturing facilities in Chalakudy, Kerala and Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, and expanded from industrial drives and test systems into transport applications, including electric vehicles and electric material-handling equipment. It entered electric-vehicle development around 1990 and became known for the Love Bird, described by the company as India’s first indigenously developed electric passenger car; the Love Bird was displayed at Auto Expo in New Delhi in 1993 and was presented as an early demonstration of battery-electric mobility in India. Beyond the Love Bird, the company’s later catalog emphasized industrial drives, dynamometers, switched-reluctance drive systems, and campus-style electric buggies/utility EVs, reflecting a blend of powertrain/control technology development and limited, application-specific vehicle manufacture rather than mass-market automobile production.
