The three Farman brothers (Dick, Maurice and Henry) built airplane engines during World War 1. With their factories lying unused after the war had ended, the Farmans decided to enter the luxury car market with the 6,694cc 40hp A6B, developed by Charles Waseige and using the latest aero engineering practices.
The car had six welded steel cylinders surrounded by a steel water jacket and single overhead camshaft. Although it was shown in 1919, production did not start until 1921, when modifications were made. The cone clutch was replaced with a multi-plate variety and the gearbox was now in unit with the engine. There was also a steering wheel lock. The Farman attracted a wealthy clientele, including the Shah of Iran and the Sultan of Morocco.
From 1923 cylinder blocks cast in Alpax alloy gradually replaced the earlier engine construction. In 1926 a very complex compound suspension system was developed employing transverse leaf-springs at both front and rear with radius rods and four semi-elliptic helper springs. Separate steering mechanisms by worm and sector on each stub axle were introduced.
The 7-litre NF model of 1929 acquired a ribbon radiator shell and other American-inspired styling features, with the classic A6B still continuing in production. Farman stopped car production in 1931, having built approximately 100 A6B and NF cars combined.
