Brand Data

Company Name: Davis Cycle & Motor Works

Place: Adelaide, South Australia

Country: Australia

Davis Cycle & MotorWorks was established in 1901 in Adelaide, South Australia, by Dick Davis, who had previously operated a cycle business during the era of penny-farthing bicycles. The company marked its entry into the automotive industry with the production of a four-seater car powered by a 3-horsepower air-cooled petrol engine. This vehicle featured a unique design where the body was suspended on the chassis, rather than the chassis being sprung on the axles, which was a notable engineering choice for its time.

The car was equipped with a countershaft and two belts, which were engaged through lever-controlled clutches. It was reported that the vehicle could reach speeds of 15 miles per hour (24 km/h) on well-maintained roads. Despite its innovative design and early production in Adelaide, Davis Cycle & MotorWorks faced challenges, leading to the closure of its cycle operations in 1902. Following this, Dick Davis transitioned to a role at the Dunlop Company in Brisbane, marking the end of his automotive venture.
