DC Design - Gaia

time-calendar.png 2003

The car draws cues from the cars of the bygone era. Cars like the Bentley Blower and the Bugatti Royale which are still considered classics for their distinct profile and styling. Both were cars that connoted power and grace and continue to be unforgettable icons of power and beauty.

The design intent of this car has been to recreate the same magic nevertheless in a more modern, distinctive and original package. DC Design understands the prime importance proportions play in the overall style and stance of a car, in continuation of the fact that the most evocative cars of all time have always been skewed in proportion - too long a hood, or too long a boot. True classics have always been born out of these extremities and this car prescribes to the same recipe albeit tossed around in an all new concept.

The DC Gaia furthers this philosophy to a greater extent even more so and the design is targeted to impress the most jaded automotive enthusiasts. Another factor was that the car be believable and pure and at the same time showcasing progress to an extent. The idea was to graduate the viewer to the next plane rather than it being a visual shock. The Gaia does not lean too much into the future and as a result is more palatable to the eye today. The aluminium machined inserts incorporated into the bumpers reflect the cars of bygone eras. Huge 22 inch wheels fill the massive arches and give the Gaia an unbelievable side profile. Extremely tight overhangs and a 'pinched in corners' rear highlight the rest of the car. The front intends to be truckish and bold in appearance; a little wicked we might add.

The interior reflects single surfaces away from highly organic shape of today's automotive interiors- much like minimalist Italian furniture. Subtle lines brought alive by bright colours. Angular aluminium accents dominate, in the midst of large surfaces relieving then of monotony. A thin maple strip gives some life to the otherwise metal dominated interiors- metal and wood in harmony. The interiors are completely hand crafted in the finest leather and also feature a central information screen.
