The American Steam Automobile Company was established in West Newton, Massachusetts, and operated from 1926 to 1942. The company was founded by Thomas S. Derr, who was both a graduate and a former faculty member of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Derr initially contributed to the steam car community by rebuilding Stanley Steam Cars, which were still in use in the Greater Boston area, and providing complete service and repairs for these vehicles.

Derr's significant innovation was the development of a V4 poppet-valve engine and boiler, which he introduced under the American Steam Car brand. These vehicles were built on Hudson chassis but featured unique condenser badges and hubcaps that identified them as American Steam Cars. Throughout its production run, the company completed a limited number of these cars, catering to a niche market of steam car enthusiasts. Notably, at least one American Steam Car was exported to England, where it garnered attention in the automotive press.
