Hainan

Hainan Auto Works was a Chinese vehicle manufacturer based in Haikou City, Hainan Province. The company operated on Hainan Island, an area noted for its vehicle test track, where many significant Chinese motor vehicles underwent testing.

Originally a small regional car factory, the company expanded its capabilities significantly after acquiring stamping, welding, painting, assembling, and testing equipment from Ford Philippines. This investment allowed it to move beyond basic production into more advanced vehicle manufacturing.

In 1990 the works developed a car of the Huaxing type, marketed as the Hainan HX 7080. Two years later, in 1992, production began on the Hainan HMC 6470, a 1970cc station wagon based on an earlier Mazda 929 design. The company also produced a 1.6-litre saloon derived from the Mazda 323, sold as the Hainan HMC 6430.

Among its other products was a version of the Mazda MPV, marketed as the Hainan HMC 6450 and equipped with a V6 3-litre engine, alongside a long-wheelbase variant designated the HMC 6472. A separate project to build a seven-seat Mercedes-Benz-based MPV was initiated but abandoned in the late 1990s.

By that time, Hainan Auto Works had become part of the First Auto Works Group, one of the major state-affiliated automotive conglomerates in China.
