Top Tips for New Drivers

Nov 05, 2021

If you have recently passed your test, congratulations! Becoming a new driver is an exciting concept. You now have the freedom to go wherever you want, whenever you want. However, driving alone without an instructor sitting beside you can be daunting, now you no longer have someone guiding you through your journey and you may have several questions that need answering in relation to driving solo. In this blog, we're going to offer some helpful advice to develop your confidence on the road and improve your skills as a new driver. Take a look at our 5 top tips below:

1. Buy a used car

As soon as you pass your test, you may be ready to purchase a car. You should consider carefully what type of car will be best for you and whether you should buy a brand-new or used car. While buying new may give you the thrill factor, it isn't necessarily the most practical option. Used cars in Essex are not only cheaper to buy, but they typically have much lower tax fees, while repair costs are also much lower, making it a much more feasible choice as a new driver. What's more, you can pick up a used car almost immediately, rather than having to endure a lengthy waiting period when buying new from the showroom.

2. Drive in bad weather as soon as possible

During your driving lessons, you may not have endured poor weather conditions, therefore, when left to your own devices, you may find it intimidating to venture out in treacherous conditions. Getting to grips with working your car headlights for various conditions and understanding the appropriate stopping distances, for example, will ensure you're driving safely in wind, rain or snow.

3. Keep passengers to a minimum

While you may be eager to give your friends a ride, it's not necessarily the most sensible decision upon first passing your test. Having too many people in the car could seriously distract you from the road and lead to a potential collision. For starters, you may find it difficult to get a clear view out of the back window, while the noise of others can prevent you from being aware of potential hazards within your surroundings.

4. Consider fuel consumption

Fuel is one of the most expensive aspects of running a car, therefore, it may be useful to understand the main ways of improving fuel efficiency. In turn, this will lower the consumption and keeps your car in good working condition. Some of the most common ways to manage fuel consumption include:

- Reducing the number of short journeys you make

- Driving at a slow, steady pace

- Avoiding sharp breaking

- Changing gears smoothly

- Reducing the internal weight within your car

- Taking your car for regular services

5. Get familiar with car maintenance

Understanding how to maintain your car will not only keep it in good condition but will also improve your safety on the road. Some of the most important aspects include checking headlights, brake discs and battery, as well as keeping your oil and windscreen water levels high.
