6 Essential Motocross Gears that Prioritises Safety

Mar 03, 2020

Have you ever been in a bike race when you were a kid? You can still probably imagine it – the wind blowing on your face and the speed-pumping adrenaline rush just before that final push to the finish line. As an adult, you perhaps picture yourself riding an upgraded motorbike with the same feelings as you had when you were a child. But if you are now in the process of preparing to join your first ever motocross race, then you may need to consider getting the right gear for your racing needs.

While Alpinestars and a host of other brands are hoping to catch your buying-eye, it is first essential to consider the function of each of your accessories. Motocross world champions like Roger de Coster, Ryan Villopoto, Eli Tomac, and Jeffrey Herlings never leave for a race without these six must-have gear essentials.

Boots

Regular work boots will not do for any race because your feet will absorb the impact of jumps and stops. The main reason for getting the proper racing boots should be for the protection of the foot, shin, ankles, and calf. It should protect them from the footpegs on your bike. Your motocross boots should also keep your feet in place to prevent twisting or breaking ankles during a ride or a fall.

Helmet

Whether you are using a kid's bike or a luxury motorcycle, you can fall. A person on two wheels will always be required to wear a helmet as per the law. Without it, you cannot ride even a block away from your place. There are a lot of very cheap helmets, but not all of them are quality-tested. That said, price should not be a consideration when buying one since your safety will be at risk. It would be best if you are comfortable when you try it on and it should be a proper fit. A loose-fitting helmet may fly off your head upon impact. But a very tight-fitting one may do more damage when it needs removal immediately. Ensure that there is a comfort padding layer with a shock-absorbing shell.

Neck Support

A neck brace is the usual support of choice. Designed to prevent injury during a crash situation, it diverts impact away from the spine and the neck. It is also lightweight and should be easy to put on and remove whenever necessary. The brace can also be worn under or over the jersey of the rider.

Body Armour

Whether you use a brand like Alpinestars or not, the whole body of a rider should be protected before, during, and immediately after a race. But unlike its medieval predecessor, the body armour of a racer should be lightweight and well-ventilated when worn. Built with a grid structure that aims to protect the back, chest, and neck, some of the available body armour also comes full-sleeved, so shoulders and elbows are also well-protected.

Gloves

Racing is a dangerous sport. Falls and spills are sometimes inevitable. Hands are not exempt from injury. Wear gloves to protect the hands better while driving. It provides a steady grip to the throttle bars and prevents slipping.

Knee Brace Socks

Hyper-extension of the knee is a clear and present danger in any race or riding event. A pair of knee brace socks safeguard the well-being of the kneecaps. These are usually lightweight, comfortable, and hold the knee in a pivot-safe position, no matter the action or movement.

Racing is fun, but safety is a crucial factor for every ride. Getting the most state-of-the-art equipment is excellent and all that. But it is essential to protect yourself with the proper gear for you to enjoy a race or a ride whenever you want.
