The GM's XP-92 had been part of an Advanced Design program with the goal of developing a four-passenger sports coupe for Pontiac. In October 1959, a fiberglass model of the XP-92 had been showcased in the Design Dome for a management review. Despite showcasing some intriguing new features, the program had been shelved soon after the review.

During May 1959, Pontiac Studio had relocated the XP-92 clay model to the Design Dome for evaluation. Known as "El Tigre", the XP-92 program had been initiated to craft a four-passenger sports coupe for Pontiac.

By October 1959, Pontiac Studio had exhibited the completed fiberglass model of XP-92, referred to as the "Phantom," on the viewing patio for assessment. The XP-92 had been envisioned as a fresh sports coupe model for Pontiac. However, the program was terminated shortly after the review due to the exorbitant cost associated with developing a specific body style for just one division.
